Local Ospreys
Ospreys (Pandion haliaetus) are prominent raptors in central Massachusetts, particularly during the spring and summer months. They favor habitats near shallow, fish-rich waters such as rivers, lakes, and reservoirs, which provide ideal fishing grounds. Notable nesting sites include the Greenbriar Recreational Facility in Oxford, where a dedicated platform supports an active osprey nest . These birds are easily identified by their striking white heads with dark eye stripes, brown upperparts, and white underparts. They possess a unique reversible outer toe and spiny footpads, adaptations that aid in grasping slippery fish. Ospreys feed almost exclusively on live fish, diving feet-first into the water to catch prey such as trout, sunfish, and perch . Their presence in the region is a testament to successful conservation efforts, including the installation of nesting platforms and the banning of harmful pesticides like DDT. Today, ospreys are a common and cherished sight along Massachusetts waterways. (Mass.gov, All About Birds, oxfordma.us, Wikipedia, Wikipedia)
